Empowering Youth in Phnom Penh

After the genocide, the structure of many families disintegrated, leaving young people without role models. The psychological trauma of war persisted between generations and eroded long held cultural values of family and community. Consequently, problems such as selling children for sex became more tolerated. FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS provides opportunities for Cambodian youth to tell their own stories and to utilize the filmmaking process as a catalyst for healing the historical wounds of war.

Country Information

Program Overview

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS places experienced filmmakers and arts educators in the city of Phnom Penh. Participants teach filmmaking, media literacy, and technology directly to Cambodia youth in close collaboration with experienced conflict counselors at Children for Change Cambodia. Filmmakers are provided curriculum, equipment, airfare, housing, and food for 1 full year.

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS works closely with Children for Change Cambodia and the FutureSense Foundation to teach filmmaking to students of various ages. Additionally, participants work closely with partner staff to provide opportunities for student empowerment and creativity as a means of further developing Cambodian youth’s ability to tell their own stories, process the events of the past, and inspire a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Health & Safety

Our number one priority is the health and safety of participating filmmakers. In-country orientation includes discussion of health and safety issues and practical information to enable participants to stay safe and well. Throughout the year, the Field Director and your host community will serve as a support system for you as you navigate a new country. Although most of the countries where FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS works do not have medical facilities comparable to those in the United States, we avoid placing volunteers at sites that do not have access to adequate medical care. All volunteers are required to secure independent emergency medical evacuation insurance.

Financial Details

The Cambodia Program is fully funded. FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS and its partner organizations cover the total cost of flights, housing, and food.  However, participants are required to submit a fully-refundable $1000 deposit that will be returned to them upon completion of their 1 year contract.
